Childhood ends, work and family commitments take over, and all that youthful imagination stops? Or does it?
As a child, I loved writing stories, but I was in my fifties when I wrote my first – and intended to be – standalone book. A vague idea for an older children’s fantasy adventure, set around Christmas, embedded itself in my brain. I reached for the laptop and ‘Silver Linings’ was born! But characters can take over, and the author becomes just the instrument to write their story – but I quite like most of them, so I won’t complain.
Three sequels followed: ‘Queen of Diamonds’ ‘Fool’s Gold’ and ‘Avaroc Returns’ and subsequent media reviews compared me to J K Rowling, Philip Pullman and J R R Tolkein. I am now writing two – so far untitled books – a prequel and a spin-off.
I have also written a series of books for younger children: two are already available, ‘Lorna and the Loch Ness Monster’ and ‘The Raven and the Thief’. The next three, which launch this year, are gentle awareness books highlighting our fascinating native wildlife.
Although writing is paramount, it gives so much more. I run a monthly workshop for adults and 2020 brings the twelfth year of our creative writing competition for children of Nottinghamshire. Seeing confidence in writing grow and imagination developing, whether in adults or children, is a joy. So, if you know children from Nottinghamshire who would like to enter, please direct them to my email address or Facebook page.
